Your little contribution towards Global concerns
Mary Jean Tomlin, a famous American actress turned social worker famously quoted “I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody”.
That ‘somebody’ can be a social worker, a compassionate soul, or an aspiring world changer. Social workers realize ‘now’ is the time to act.
Social workers are those who put in efforts in their best capacity, to solve problems pertaining to social welfare and community wellbeing. There are various ways in which an individual can be a social worker. Also, there are various levels of efforts one can choose to put in as per the availability of resources. You need not dedicate a lot to help the community you live in. You can do it at an individual level thus turning into a responsible global citizen, to inspire the rest. While many are blessed to be introduced to this concept at an early age via moral science classes or community work as a subject in educational institutions, many are not half as lucky and need to figure out how, where and when to stat with some research and planning done.
While choosing to begin your journey with social work, one needs to know of the global issues by large and then plan to enter areas where keen interest lies. For example, if you love children and are great with handling them, working with special or underprivileged kids could be easy and fun. Managing resources could be another guideline for you to pick your area of contribution. For example, if you have the resource to make a network of counselors, you could help rehab centers and contribute to the cause of addiction.
As a responsible global citizen, if one cannot be a full-time social worker, doing his or her bit in some free time is quite easy. Many of us wish to contribute but don’t exactly understand where to start! Also, in the middle of our pre-planned well set daily routines, we cannot easily step out to explore options too. Here we are, helping you start by taking the first little step towards a life-changing cause. The first step is to gain knowledge in areas where we could be of use. Pointing out on 3 major global issues posing severe threats to the world balance, where one can find space to act upon.
- Climate Change-
Problem: Climate change is one of the crucial concerns posing threats with respect to the exponential rise in temperatures, imbalance of the food pyramid and increasing diseases. The prediction says global temperatures are to rise to 4.8 degree Celsius by 2100.
Solution: Focusing on activities that restore the environmental balance is the key. You could contribute to various wide parameters like working on technology to bring in solutions to classic issues like recycling material, focusing on reforestation and cutting down on various carbon-emitting sources. You can join movements like “one plant a month” or choose a line of education which develops great environmentalists.
- Illiteracy –
Problem: It’s a vicious cycle. Lack of education has a very negative impact on society. When people are deprived of basic education and training, there is a rise in unemployment, violence, inequality, lack of knowledge and of a broader outlook and basics. At the same time, education can solve a plethora of global problems like malnourishment and substance abuse too, by making people aware and employable.
Solution: Working with organizations that impart education to masses, irrespective of any peripheral circumstances like sex, religion or social status and investing in developing teachers, schools and educational material.
- Corruption –
Problem: Corruption is a wide topic which has various sections. Government corruption is one of the major issues leading to poverty and unequal distribution of resources. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This also leads to violence, unemployment and class parity in return.
Solution: The anti-corruption awareness is high and with the help of media and technology, one can spread messages banning anti-corruption practices.
There are various other parameters posing global problems like Terrorism and Security Threats, Prostitution, Child Labor, Starvation etcetera.
If one wants to genuinely make an impact, there is never a better time than NOW to pick any one of the above-mentioned global concerns and start working towards it taking baby steps and one day at a time!
