Hear the modern Demands of modern Fugitives!
Think about it, if police can use every legal way to arrest criminals, fugitives, thieves; then it’s obvious that even these people will use ways to delay their arrest or not get arrested! Albeit Illegal. This has been going on since thousands of years, after all, who likes to be put behind bars?
When they had no other way to escape, the fugitives had simple demands before getting arrested, like meeting their loved ones, asking not to handcuff or beat, etc. But this 21st century digital age has given birth to some new kind of demands!
Take the case of this one fugitive from Connecticut named Jose Simms. He agreed to surrender himself to the City of Torrington Police Department, if and when his “Wanted” poster of a Facebook post by the police department get 15,000 likes!
Yes, like you, even the Police officers gave this baffling reaction when they heard it for the first time. Simms came across Facebook posts of the police department when they began posting “Wanted” posters of many fugitives on their official Facebook page.
Simms then contacted officer Lt. Brett Johnson on Facebook messenger and initially told when his image will appear, it should get 20,000 likes to secure his surrender! Fortunately for the officer, he succeeded in bringing that number down to 15,000.
Beware, Simms is not just any small-time criminal. He has been charged with protective order violation, drugs, breach of peace, DUI, and false reporting cases. So far Simms is wanted on four warrants for 1st degree failure to appear in court and also three warrants for 2nd degree failure!
The police department had exhausted other avenues to bring him in, so when he reached out to them on Facebook, they had nothing to lose, but only a target of 15,000 likes. Just like a silver lining to a dark cloud, the police hoped that more the people see his “wanted” image, more will be the chances of someone giving them vital information regarding his whereabouts.
It wasn’t so difficult for the police to garner that much response as within 3 days, the said post got about 19,000 likes. But to their surprise or shall we say expectations, Simms didn’t surrender himself! Neither did anyone provide any info about him.
Like a true fugitive, Simms have assured the Connecticut police and also multiple news agencies that he will surely surrender himself; but again, like a true fugitive, even after one week, he is yet to honor his own words! As long as anyone provides any whereabouts of him to the police, they can only sit and hope that he willingly gives up to them. Spare a thought for the poor policemen, what all things they have to do in today’s times to even capture a fugitive!
