It is the holiday season again and this time of year there’s a lot of love to go around. So, in the midst of sharing love with your family and buying gifts for everyone, it is also a time where we appreciate those people who have served us all year long. Don’t be scared, it does not mean you have to break the bank if funds are tight.  A homemade gift could suffice. It will, of course, tell them how much you have appreciated their service throughout the year.

These people could include your doctor, hairstylist, your babysitter, the mailman, the elevator operator in your building, the handyman, and a lot of others. Tipping may be difficult considering the fact that you don’t know how to go about it and how much is appropriate. Well, the truth is you don’t need to go overboard to show your appreciation. Here are some tips to help you go through holiday tipping.

Tipping in General

Generally, tipping even during the holidays will depend on some factors

1. The relationship you have with the service provider. If you have given some health tips and shared a Thanksgiving turkey with some of them, chances are that you do maintain a closer relationship with them than others.

2. Your location could also be a determinant. If you’re in a populated city, you’ll probably tip more than you would in other places.

3. If you have been using this same service for over 2 or 3 years, you’ve practically become family.

4. Your budget generally would also determine the tip you give to all your service providers. You don’t have to go broke though. You could make use of homemade gifts or food items.

5. If you tip them on a regular basis, then you may not have a need for a big holiday trip.

Now that you know what determines who and how you should tip, let’s discuss appropriate amounts if you want to tip your service providers this season.

Housekeeper

If you have a live-in housekeeper, you should give them a month’s pay or its equivalent and maybe throw in a gift too.

Hair Stylist

If you are a regular and you come in about once biweekly, you should give your stylist or barber one haircut or session’s worth or a gift or you could do both.

Babysitter, Dog Trainer, Personal Trainer

You could do the cost of one session for your dog and personal trainer and one evening’s pay for your babysitter.

Mail carrier, Newspaper Delivery Person

For these people, you could do a homemade gift since mail carriers are not allowed to collect monetary gifts.

Masseuse

For your therapist, if you’re a regular, you could give one session’s pay.

One thing you should remember is that tipping especially during the holidays shouldn’t give you a headache if your budget does not include it. You could send each and every one of them a thank you card and that would still suffice.
