Cost Free Acts of Kindness for the Holidays

Unfortunately, people all over the world are in need year ’round, but something about the holidays makes individuals want to be more giving.  Some people avoid charity or giving to others in everyday life because they cannot afford it.  This is a perfectly valid reason to horde your resources.  However, there are plenty of ways to donate to the people that need it or least expect it.

Donate Blood or Plasma

In 2019, the American Red Cross reported that there are only 6 unites of type “O” blood for every 100,000 people.  The go on to state that at least 16 units of type “O” blood are needed for every 100,000 people.

Volunteer

In decades past, you used to have to go to the local shelter, Humane Society, or any number of brick and mortar places to volunteer.  Now, you need not go any further than your computer.  Virtual volunteers are becoming a big part of charity work.  Organizations need people with a variety of skills from typing to being a part time CEO.  Here are a few sites to check out that list both virtual and local volunteer opportunities:

Send Someone a Handwritten Letter

No, we are not talking about sending a letter to your congressperson.  This is a letter of appreciation that can be held onto instead residing the trash folder of your email.  Think of a teacher, group leader, family member, etc. that had a profound positive impact on your life.  A handwritten letter can go a long way assuming your handwriting is better than mine and, ya know, legible.

Befriend a Stranger

This doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds.  You may not be aware, but there are online forums full of people that have no one.  One example is the r/Needafriend thread on Reddit.  Tons of people have no one to talk to and they often just need to vent or share their experiences from the day.  I am not suggesting you tell them your social security number (of even your name if you don’t want to), but you would be surprised at the warmth you may find.

Donate Things

I am betting you have a pile of books you will NEVER open again.  Some people do not have books to read or their selection is so bad they won’t read.  This is one of those things we take for granted.  You can donate books, clothes, dishes, appliances, glasses/eyewear, and much much more.  Donating the things we don’t use is such an easy way to help someone else.

The things we have discussed can be done at any time throughout the year and we should try to not just do them during the holidays.  Millions of people need help and there are lots of things we can do that cost us nothing.  Every little bit counts!
